Safe Online Dating – How to Date Online Without Risking Your Personal Safety

Article by Mary Tanady

It is safe to go online dating if you know the rules and you always have a backup plan. Dating online is almost the same as meeting new people at a party or any public place. Often you would want to get the names and phone numbers of people you meet for the first time. This is the same with online dating, except that you can even look at the other person’s profile, before you even become friends.

Look at online dating as similar to online shopping. When shopping online, you would normally research for information about the product before purchasing. You would also like to do the exact thing before signing up into some online dating websites.

For a safe online date, bear these tips in mind. These dating tips are important and very helpful for both guys and girls.

1. Ensure that the site has their Terms of Service, Privacy Policy, and copyright information posted. Check for any obvious errors in spelling or grammar on the site. 2. Search the site if there are members within your age and location. Confirm if their profile is irrational or unbelievable. 3. If it is a paid online dating site, try using the website for free first, to observe how the company stores your information and how it reacts and deals with the comments and complaints. 4. Perform your own research regarding the site focusing more on the problems, complaints and reviews about it. You can determine if there is an ongoing or resolved complaint about the site and if other users consider or have proven that it is not safe to use this site.

If you’re going to meet someone personally from a dating website keep these things in mind:

1. Always inform a family member or a friend where you’re going, for how long you will be out, and let them know when you’re home. 2. You should always meet up in public places during the first few dates. If for some reason your date refuses to see you at a public place, perhaps it will be better to bring a friend along, who may watch you from a distance. 3. Be certain that you’ve obtained a reliable contact number from the person prior to the meeting. Make sure to note down the information somewhere in your house before leaving. If possible, write on a notebook or a diary the name of the person you are meeting, and where and when the meeting will take place. 4. Try Googling your date. It may sound a little creepy, but knowing a little bit of information about that person will help you decide whether you must take additional safety measures or not.

Online dating is a great way to meet new people, but it can also lead to some risks. Remember not to let your guard down when visiting online dating sites and keep in mind that your safety is your priority, above anything else.
